The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University is collaborating with the City of Cape Town’s Energy Department on a study aimed at improving energy efficiency and assessing renewable energy options for municipal properties. The current focus is the Long Street Baths, an indoor heated swimming pool that relies on four heat pumps for water heating. We are measuring the energy consumption of each heat pump and investigating the feasibility of integrating solar water heaters and/ or solar PV systems to offset energy use.

This project serves as a case study comparing the effectiveness of solar water heating and PV in pool applications where heat pumps are already installed. Conducted in collaboration with the City of Cape Town, it highlights the involvement of SOLTRAIN and CRSES through engagement with local networks.
